Potential of Canna indica in Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands for Heavy Metals and Nitrogen Removal from Algiers Refinery Wastewater

چکیده
Constructed wetlands (CWs) are important plant filters used for wastewater treatment. The behavior of the Canna indica-planted CWs in face a highly variable composition industrial has yet to be understood. Here, we show effectiveness and unplanted vertical subsurface flow treatment Algiers petroleum refinery’s effluent. selected species was placed containing light expanded clay aggregate (LECA) sand as substrate. findings indicate that planted constructed efficiently removed 85% total suspended solids (TSS), 96.38% nitrogen (TN), 96.15% nitrate (NO3?-N), 99.15% ammonium (NH4+-N), 99.87% nitrite (NO2?-N). overall mean removal efficiencies heavy metals vegetated were considerably greater than those control. Concentrations Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn, Al, Ni, Cd calculated roots, rhizomes, leaves, stems plant; then, bioaccumulation factor (BAF) translocation (TF) determined. An initial examination using scanning electron microscopy (SEM–EDX) also included study. analysis indicated toxic elements adsorbed on tissues, concentrated partially transported aerial parts. These results useful design treat wastewater, enabling water acceptable quality discharged into environment, especially low maintenance cost-effective technology developing countries.

Pollutant removal by Canna Generalis in tropical constructed wetlands for domestic wastewater treatment
Constructed wetlands have not been commonly used in Vietnam due to the lack of information in the selection of proper types of constructed wetlands, type of reeds, design parameters and performance efficiency, in tropical climates. This paper focuses on Canna generalis, which is a common reed and easy to grow both in water and wet land conditions. Two kinds of hybrid constructed wetlan...
متن کاملRemoval Mechanisms in Constructed Wastewater Wetlands
The use of constructed wetlands is a relatively new technology but the system is gaining popularity due to its low tech system for treating wastewater (DeBusk, 1999b).Constructed wetlands have found to be effective in treating domestic wastewater where municipalities are concerned with reducing suspended solids, organic matter, phosphorus, nitrogen, and pathogens. Constructed wetlands mimic nat...
متن کاملRecirculating Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands
In parts of the United States where soils are very permeable, conventional septic tank and absorption field systems are considered the largest contributor to waterborne disease and pollution of water bodies. However, an economical, recirculating vertical flow (RVF) constructed wetland, used as a pretreatment system, can significantly improve the performance of conventional onsite wastewater tre...
